CHS girls end regular season with loss

CLAY CENTER — The Concordia Panthers finished up the regular season with a 54-23 North Central Kansas League loss to Clay Center on Tuesday night.
Playing a fourth game in seven days, and a third straight without leading scorer Leyli Beims, the Panthers trailed the Tigers by just 10 points five minutes into the second quarter.

The Panthers will play second-seeded Hesston at Hesston on Monday night.
Concordia coach Michael Wahlmeier pointed out to the Panthers prior to the game that they had played hard against quality opponents in games leading up to the regular season finale.
“I told them, If you bring that effort and energy to this game we will be fine,” Wahlmeier said, “I don’t think it was there, and it is difficult without Leyli in there.”
Concordia fell behind 8-2 to start the game, but trailed just 10-6 when Megan James scored inside with 3:19 to play in the first quarter.
Clay Center, 10-10 overall and 6-4 in the league, scored the final seven points of the period to go up 17-6.

“Tristen hit a three, and we leave Bloom wide open, and she hits one,” Wahlmeier said.

Bloom and Nicole DeMars sandwiched a pair of threes around three free throws by Macy Franson, and the Tigers led 31-2.
James scored to make it 31-14 at halftime.
Molly Adams got an offensive rebound and putback 35 seconds into the second half to get Concordia within 15 points, 31-16.

James went one of two from the free throw line, but Steppe knocked down back-to- back threes to extend the Tigers’ lead to 44-17.
Clay Center was up 46-19 heading into the fourth quarter.
“We used to think we played pretty good defense, and rebounded well, and I don’t think either one of those things was there,” Wahlmeier said.
Clay Center scored the first three points of the final period to go up 49-19.
The Panthers got no closer than 28 points after that.
