Lady Raiders overpower Concordia
The Wamego Red Raiders remained unbeaten in the North Central Kansas League by overpowering the Concordia Panthers 64-19 Friday night in the Concordia Junior-Senior High School gymnasium.
Wamego, 14-4 overall, improved to 9-0 in league.
Concordia, playing without leading scorer Leyli Beims, who is sidelined with an injury, fell to 2-7 in the NCKL.
Knocking down a pair of three-point shots, the Red Raiders got out to a 15-0 lead in the game.
The Red Raiders finished with seven threes, including three each by Kaylee Page and Lakyn Rowden.
Page, a 6-1 sophomore guard, scored 24 points in the game.
“They are so long and athletic,” Concordia coach Michael Wahlmeier said, “They can score inside and knock down three pointers.”
Concordia did not score until Nikki Blankenbeckley made one of two free throws with 2:50 to play in the first period.
“I thought Nikki Blankenbeckley did a great job attacking the basket,” Wahlmeier said.
Page made two free throws for Wamego, and Jera Metro drilled a three for the Panthers.
A jumper by Lanie Page, a 6-0 freshman, gave the Red Raiders a 19-4 advantage.
Molly Adams made one of two free throws five seconds into the second period, and Concordia trailed, 19-5.
Wamego would score 22 straight points to go up 41-5.
A basket by Megan James ended the Red Raiders’ run.
Two free throws by Rachel Griffit put Wamego on top 43-7 at halftime.
Scoring the first seven points of the second half gave the Red Raiders a 50-7 cushion.
Concordia went 4:13 without scoring before Tristen Leiszler buried a three to make it 50-10.
Wamego scored the next six points.
The Red Raiders would lead 60-17 heading into the final eight minutes.
With a running clock, the two teams would combine for just five points in the fourth quarter.
James and Leiszler scored six points each for Concordia.
Rowden finished with 11 points for Wamego.
